What are Hard Water Spots
Hard water spots are the little outlines of water drops left behind on your vehicle’s exterior surface after it dries, even after washing and waxing. Hard water spots are caused by water with a high mineral content. It can come from municipal water, or form through the combination of dirt and rain or dew on your car. When water evaporates from the surface of your car, these minerals remain behind and form the hard water spots. These water spots are caustic to your vehicle’s exterior–the longer you wait to redress the water spots, the more difficult they are to remove, and the likelier they are to cause permanent damage to your vehicle’s paint job or glass surfaces through etching.
How We Remove Superficial Water Spots From Car Exteriors
If the water spots are just sitting on your car’s exterior, we use acidic solutions on your paint to dissolve the minerals. On the glass, we use clay bars and if that doesn’t work, carefully use acidic solutions. On most plastic trim we use oily solutions and scrub pads.
How We Remove Etched-In Hard Water Spots from Car Paint and Glass
If water spots have etched into your paint or glass surfaces, it requires more attention to remove them without causing damage to the surface. To do this, we use a combination of wet-sanding, polishing, and buffing to safely remove water spots from your vehicle’s paint and glass.
Our Typical Hard Water Spots Removal Service Call
When we arrive at your location, our water spot removal service typically follows this procedure:
1. Wash the car with a power washer and slightly acidic soap to help loosen or remove water spots.
2. If that doesn’t work, treat spots with acidic solutions.
3. If that doesn’t work, proceed to using abrasive solutions such as paint or glass polishing.
4. Seal the car’s exterior to protect it from future water spots.
5. Provide maintenance tips before leaving.

Sometimes, a clay bar treatment alone clears the water spots. However, clay bars slightly mar the outer-most layer of your paint. This is expected and easily repairable with a machine polishing. However, if the car goes through automatic car washes, the abrading our clay bar treatment contributes may not be noticeable, in which case, polishing is up the the client.
If the paint is in good condition and the clay bar treatment clears the water spots, follow that treatment with a light polishing to remove the abrading it caused.
If the clay bar treatment does not clear the water spots, proceed to polishing remediation:
- Machine buff affected panels with a slightly abrasive polish, such as Meguiar’s 205. Repeat if needed. If this removes the water spots, proceed to sealing and waxing.
- If polishing alone doesn’t remove the spots, buff affected panels with an abrasive polishing compound, such as Meguiar’s 105. Tape logos, emblems, adjoining panels, etc.. Work slowly. Repeat, if needed. Take paint-thickness readings. If this removes the water spots, refine buff the paint with a lighter abrasive, like 205, then proceed to sealing and waxing.
- If polishing-compound doesn’t clear the spots, proceed to wet-sanding affected sections. Tape edges. Work slowly. Take numerous paint-thickness readings. Be conservative. Concede to some spots based on their depth or location, if needed. Compound wet-sanded area to remove sanding marks. Then proceed to compounding and/or polishing, then sealing and waxing.
Wax or seal vehicle’s exterior to protect it from future water spots.
